ABOUT
I'm a self-taught artist from Kingston, Jamaica. I've worked in various areas of commercial art, but I now paint full-time. I have participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Jamaica as well as a few outside of Jamaica. My style is representational; this is what comes naturally to me. I have tried from time to time to change my approach, be less precise and more spontaneous, but I always eventually tend toward detail. I think I now incorporate elements of both, such as in the three examples shown. In the portrait of the farmer, for instance, there's a lot of detail in the face but everything else is quite loosely done. In fact, the way that I do all of my paintings is to start very "sketchily" and add increasing layers of detail. However, it is critical for me is to start with an accurate drawing. An example of the procedure is shown in the video for the painting "Market Still Life", shown below.
I am also a classic car lover/owner/restorer. The first classic car painting that I did was the 1949 Delahaye Roadster shown below. This was based on a photo found online. I did this in 2010 as an exercise for myself and I found that this genre was well suited to my attention to detail. When I came across an opportunity online to enter a painting in an exhibition at the 2013 Salisbury Concours d'Elegance in Des Moines, Iowa, I did the painting below which I called "Face Off". I was given the "Award for Excellence". Encouraged by this, I attended the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 2014 as a spectator, where I took many hundreds of photos. These were the basis for most of my classic car paintings since then.
Aside from classic cars, my other love is racing, particularly MotoGP. The first of those paintings that I tried was "The Doctor". This painting called for very high levels of detail which suited my style perfectly. Since then I have done many more of these paintings with increasing size and levels of complexity. My technique when doing these paintings can be applied to any form of motor racing. I've started some Formula One compositions but they aren't ready to be shown yet.
I want to emphasize that these paintings are 100% hand-drawn and painted. At this time it is a common practice to take photographs and digitally manipulate them with various filters or to print the photo on canvas and paint over the print. This is NOT the case with my paintings. To see the process, there are videos here and here.
I've separated my paintings into two categories: my Jamaican paintings, three of which I've shown here; and my motorsports and automotive paintings, to which I am dedicating this site.
The paintings on this site hopefully indicate that I can also apply myself to other forms of motorsport and automotive themes. As I do more, I will add them to the portfolio. My emphasis now is to do mainly commissioned work, since most people who are passionate about racing and cars have very specific preferences. It is just as cost-effective to get a very personalized painting done as it is to buy a completed painting. Therefore, I strongly recommend placing a commission.
I welcome any questions on the subject, and look forward to your feedback. Please feel free to contact me!
